VISIT US ON THE “ORGANIC” ROUTE If we
are honest, we should confess that we knew it would take decades to rebuild an
area abandoned by people to recreate a means of living and an economy, rebuild
roads, houses and fields, and grow food using methods that will not damage the
environment. Thanks to our work, we have done all of this and also made our
contribution to the development of a production sector known as organic
farming. Over the years, there have been visits from many of our friends and
acquaintances, people who admire us, and people who consume our products -
many hundreds of them every year. To accommodate these visits with a
minimum of comfort, we have specially renovated an old farmhouse -the Alce Nero Inn
- and over the years, we have added bedrooms, a swimming pool and a
totally organic restaurant. Then we dedicated a wing of the renovated
Monastery of Montebelloto the same purpose and today, we are
able to offer hospitality to some thirty guests, we can seat fifty or so diners
and we also offer rooms for study conferences that can hold about one hundred
people. As well as the monastery and the museum of farming life, visitors
can also see the pasta factory at work. For this reason, Alce Nero has also
been an Educational Farm for years, with
activities throughout the year, above all, in spring. Visits (more than
2,000 every year) are open to all, from children at elementary and middle
schools to university students, farmers and retailers, and even guests who are
just passing through. Thus we can say that the Cooperative’s activities have
in some way achieved their initial aim. Now the hills of Montebello have
come back to life and produce again; now they have become welcoming. We are
fifteen minutes from Urbino. Those who enjoy walking will find enchanting
places, such as the great oak tree at Palazzo del Piano (born in the period of
Federico da Montefeltro), which is an hour’s walk away, or the mediaeval village
of Villa la Croce, recently restored and renovated by a group of families from
Hamburg. Along the road from Isola del Piano to Urbino, in the eight
kilometres that take you to the confines between each, there are 20 farms, of
which 18 are organic and 5 are also farm hotels. So, we will be happy to
welcome you in this countryside that is so full of “the successes” of human
toil. |
